100th Member
I can’t believe it we’ve just welcomed our 100th member on board! When we sat in a pub earlier this year it was dark, raining, cold, wet & windy. Not that different to the weather today!
The few of us sat round that table, could only have dreamt that we would ever get to 100 members in the club, let alone within it’s first year. Iceni Velo has grown beyond our wildest dream, thanks to everyone who has joined. You are the people that have enabled us to host a round of the Eastern Road Youth Race Series, enabled us to host our own road race part of the Eastern Region Road race League and have the manpower to hold a cyclo cross race in December.
It’s been great to see the number of people turning up for the Sunday club run. Sure it’s early at 07:30 but we’ve seen up to 40 riders turning up of all abilities from seasoned racers to new riders. Most with a smile on their face, usually at the cafe stop or the end of the ride!
There have been members taking part in various events, Matthew Thurston took the win in the Lotus Cars Cycle League, Chris Guy won the VC Norwich Road Race, our youth category riders have also been sharing the spoils with Imogen Buick & Cameron Toms taking numerous victories in their respective classes. We’ve had members undertaking some very hard sponsored rides as well, Johnny Vaughan & Ian Read rode from London to Norwich in a day, Rob Bacon rode all the way from Holland to Norwich in three days and plenty of other members challenging rides and events so far this year.
There’s been a whole host of new riders join the club and it’s been a pleasure to welcome them along and see them become part of the club.
We’re always on the look out for more members so if you fancy it, come along, join the forum and get involved. Join in one of the club rides. We’re a friendly bunch.

A busy and very good day for Iceni Velo. Today we held our 2012 road race on the short sharp circuit around Stoke Holy Cross which finishes at the top of the renowned Skeets hill.
I wasn’t particularly concerned about this as I had no great aspirations for the race so I rolled up to the start, took of my jacket and arm warmers and leant over the barriers to get a good luck hug from daughter #2 – it was at this point that the exceptionally loud starting pistol went and everyone apart from me started racing!
Broome Heath was pretty crisp at 7.00am on Sunday morning and – thanks to race organiser, Shaun Aldous, 5 volunteers, 140 white stakes and 4km of course tape – was slowly being transformed from a dog walkers mecca to a cyclo cross race course.
It was really touch and go as to whether i’d ride this event – it was a bit of an unknown, but from what i’d seen on the old internet, it looked like a fun evening – i’d play it by ear.
