Based in Norwich and founded in 2011 we are Norfolk’s newest club with lots of ideas and enthusiasm for our sport. Our aim is promote all aspects of cycling both competitive as well as for pleasure, fitness and transportation including specialist sessions for ladies and novice riders. Our current members take part in a range of cycling including Mountain Biking, Club runs, Sportives, Cyclo Cross, Road Racing, Time Trialing, Triathlon and even Ironman events.
Founded by a fifty plus strong group of cyclists, both male and female, young and old that all share a mutual passion for cycling Iceni Velo has evolved from what was Streetlife Cycles / Extreme Sports Therapy – CCN. Our unofficial group became so popular that we have now become an official British Cycling affiliated club.
Although not essential for every rider out there we recommend aquiring either a BCF ride license for those not wishing to race, or a BCF race license for those that might want to participate in high level racing.
Please follow the link below to view the pricing and benefits of each membership provided by British Cycling.
If you have any further questions regarding BCF membership please contact Tim Guy using this contact form.
Whether you are a keen enthusiast or new comer Iceni Velo will always offer you a warm welcome. We pride ourselves on a strong bond of friendship and support. We really hope to see you soon so please get in touch or join us for a ride out. No one gets left behind!
Iceni Velo, ‘The most inclusive cycle club in Norfolk’
We are affiliated to the following organisations:
British Cycling
Cycling Trials Trials (formerly the RTTC)
Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC)
The name Iceni is derived from the Iceni tribe who were ruled by Queen Boudicca and occupied most of Norfolk and Suffolk around 61 AD (over 2000 years ago).
If you would like to be part of a community of like minded people for fitness, enjoyment, a challenge or simply because you love cycling then Iceni Velo is for you. We cater for any types of cyclists whatever your background, for more information about what we already do please read below.
We have regular groups that cater for MTB’s, road, hill climbing (well Norfolk hills!!) and pretty much anything that involves 2 wheels.
Our partners, Gold Medal Sports are a Norfolk based project management company that works within the sports industry. Gold Medal Sports currently offer a number of cycling based activities including; mountain bike instructor courses, MTB skills rides for beginner and intermediate riders, MTB trail maintenance workshops and Bikeability cycle training in schools.
All of these aspects are a fantastic way to develop skills that can be applied to all types of cycling.
We are hoping to organise some ladies training groups so check back for details. We also have quite a few ladies who specialise in Triathlons so if this is of interest then please get in touch.
We have a great team of riders who are regulars around the Thetford area, whether its racing or just a social ride. We have also had some great success from the team winning high profile events such as dusk till dawn, and Thetford summer and winter series events.
For more details please visit Thetford MTB website
We have a strong group of riders that regularly compete in local event at various levels. There are regular training rides which are ideal sessions for improving riding skills which will help anybody thinking of competing.
We will be holding our own road race this year as part of the ERRL (Eastern Road Race League) so remember to check our events page for details.
Iceni Velo and the Eastern Road Race League
We at Iceni Velo believe in giving club members access to all levels of cycling. This is why we are part of the ERRL. It enables those cyclists which would like to compete at the highest level of east anglian road cycling a greater chance of entry to these races.
We have dedicated and experienced road race club members that are always willing to provide new members with advice and direction if they should wish to race these events.
The Eastern Road Race League, formerly known as the Essex Road Race League, is the premier organisation for club-level road racing in the East of England. Currently, the league consists of 43 member clubs, each of whom promote one or more road races during the season.
Members of ERRL clubs are given preferential entry to these races, and compete a season-long competition to be the top team and individual at the end of the year.
Currently, races are held in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk
For more information regarding the ERRL please feel free to contact Ben Nicholson our ERRL representative.
We have quite a few top level cyclo cross riders within the team who would be happy to help and give advice to anyone interested in competing. Cyclocross is a great sport to get into and is a perfect family event with categories for under 12 and great for spectating. For some more details click “What is Cyclocross” below.
We will be holding a cyclocross event later in the year as part of the Eastern Cyclos Cross League. For more details on the league have a look on website (Eastern Cross League)
Winter Fun: Cyclo-Cross (often abbreviated to ‘Cross) is generally an autumn and winter sport. Massed starts make for exciting races, usually no more than an hour in length – and shorter for juniors, women and veterans. There are usually free-to-enter races for younger riders. Some organisers are now starting to run summer series, which are proving very popular.
Lapping it Up! Cyclo-Cross races are usually multi lap events, held on short (typically less than a mile and often less than half a mile), grassy courses, generally in public parks or on school playing fields. Less technically demanding than Mountain Biking, Cyclo-Cross often requires riders to dismount to clear artificial obstacles – often wooden boards. The ability to swap smoothly and quickly from riding to running and back to riding in one fluid motion is a key skill for advanced riders.
Private Battles: The short lap lengths mean that better riders often lap some of the slower competitors, but that’s not the end of the race – you can still submerge yourself in the action, enjoy your own private battles and forget whether you are first or a hundred and first – that’s the beauty of the sport: it’s what you make of it that counts.
Bike Facts: Cyclo-Cross machines look very similar to road bikes, with dropped handlebars and thin tyres – however the latter have a knobbled-tread for grip, powerful brakes, low gears and better frame clearances to prevent clogging with mud, all of which adds up to make them easy to handle on the rough.
